How to take part in a petition debate

These steps are for you as an MP, rather than your staff.

Step-by-step:

  1. If you wish to take part in a petition debate, follow the same process as for other debates. Write to, or email, the Speaker’s Office, to explain that you would like to speak. You may wish to mention if you have a particular constituency or other interest in the petition.
  2. You should be present for the opening speech at the start of the debate.
  3. After the opening speech catch the Chair’s eye by standing to show you want to speak. The Chair will call you at a convenient moment.
  4. Once you have spoken, you should stay to hear the remainder of the debate.
