Amending an Early Day Motion

You can amend an Early Day Motion (EDM). You can submit an amendment online using the MemberHub, or in hard copy via the Table Office. Amendments must be on the same subject as the original EDM and must not make it longer than 250 words. You can only table an amendment to an EDM when the House is meeting. You can submit an amendment at other times, but it won’t be tabled until the House meets again.

Any MP can add their name to your amendment. The process is the same as for adding your name to the original EDM.

You can’t sign both an EDM and an amendment to it. If you sign an amendment to an EDM, the Table Office will remove your name from the main EDM.

You can’t amend your own EDM,(except to correct minor mistakes) but you can withdraw it (even if other MPs have already signed it). Contact the Table Office to withdraw your EDM.
