Oral statements take place in the Chamber. The Government use them to tell MPs about developments in policy or react to an event. Oral statements give you a chance to scrutinise ministers by asking questions about the statement. Examples of subjects include:
- changes in Government policy and the reasons for them
- the outcome of an international summit, negotiation or other meeting
- the publication of a report
- a terrorist attack
- a national or overseas natural disaster
- an international political or security crisis
- a significant court judgment or the findings of an official inquiry
